‘Ik, Jan Cremer’. De titel van het boek waar we het niet over zullen hebben, en dat toch een paar keer opduikt in ons gesprek. ’Ik, Jan Cremer’. Een autobiografisch boek vol ervaringen in het ruige leven van de gelijknamige schrijver en schilder. Menno wilde het leven op een soortgelijke wijze ervaren, en reizen, net als Jan Cremer.

Met dat verschil dat hij, in tegenstelling tot Cremer, vaak na vier dagen alweer terug was op de plek van waaruit hij was vertrokken. Ook al meende hij maanden weg te willen blijven. Misschien is dit wel symbolisch voor zijn wijze van leven. Hij wil overal even aan proeven. Zoveel mogelijk ervaren. Kort, krachtig. Daarna wordt er weer een nieuwe uitdaging gezocht. “Ik zou zeven levens willen.”

Sturm und Drang

Menno Bakker, geen onbekende in de ondernemerswereld van Friesland, is echter niet alleen ondernemer, maar ook muzikant, schilder, schrijver, journalist, reiziger, vader, echtgenoot. Menno kwam er heel dicht bij. “Ik las drie keer ‘Ik, Jan Cremer’ en in plaats van studeren wilde ik de band, waar ik inmiddels als zanger deel van uitmaakte, groot maken.” Toch bleef de totale overgave nog even uit, Menno schreef zich tegelijkertijd in voor een studie journalistiek in Utrecht. “In het eerste jaar voelde ik al dat die studie veel te braaf was. Ik wilde meer. Het enige wat ik leuk vond waren de gastsprekers op vrijdagmiddag, schrijvers en journalisten.” Toen een van die sprekers duidelijk verwoordde dat het studeren toch ook niet alles was en dat je -om je de journalistiek eigen te maken- toch vooral het leven moest leren kennen, was dat een kolfje naar zijn hand. Hij stapte op.

Een goeie vriend had hem ondertussen alweer een plek in een andere band aangeboden en om een lang verhaal korte maken, zoals Menno duidt, werd dat uiteindelijk de Friese punkband: Kobus gaat naar Appelscha. Zeg maar: Frankie goes to Hollywood, maar dan anders. “Ik zag de band voor het eerst in de jaren tachtig in de kelder van centrum Hippo in Leeuwarden. Het was een soort ruige rockmuziek die ze ten gehore brachten. Ik vond het geweldig en wilde daar dolgraag deel vanuit maken. Ik heb direct mijn studie opgezegd en vier jaar lang mijn ziel en zaligheid in Kobus gaat naar Appelscha gelegd.”

‘We stonden daar te spelen met een overdosis aan adrenaline’

Volgens Menno was het één creatieve bende. “We deden onze eigen pr en marketing. Guerrilla Marketing, ook al heette dat toen nog niet zo. We creëerden de gekste dingen om maar ons verhaal te kunnen vertellen. Want dat wilden we. We brachten serieuze nummers met een verhaal, maar zodra we live gingen kwam daar een enorm spectaculaire act bij. Ruige muziek met spektakel gebracht. Alles bewoog. We gooiden objecten de zaal in, van popcorn tot slachtafval. We verwondden ons zelfs. We stonden daar te spelen met een overdosis aan adrenaline.”

“We traden vooral op voor studenten en die begonnen ons steeds beter te begrijpen. We waren punk, je weet wel met van die kogelriemen om. Die kogelriem van mij bestond op een gegeven moment uit grote makrelen. Dat werd natuurlijk een vies zooitje en ging stinken, maar we hadden een missie en lieten zien hoe we wilden leven. Ruig en eerlijk. Zo’n optreden was gewoon keihard werken.”

‘Ik heb alles weggegooid’

Na vier jaar was Menno er moe van. “We deden maanden over het maken van een elpee, hadden geen goeie producer. Het was het voor mij niet meer. Ik had alles gegeven, het was tijd voor een volgend avontuur.” Dat werd de studie kunstgeschiedenis. In tegenstelling tot wat je zou verwachten hield Menno werken van bescheiden kunstenaars. Wat hij daarmee bedoelt? “Romantici die niet direct op de barricaden stonden, maar wel het leven vierden. Schilders als William Turner en schrijvers als George Orwell en Miller. Daarnaast bleef ik zwaar beïnvloed door Cremer. Ook ik wilde de wereld verkennen, ik wilde reizen en kunst maken. Die kunst maakte ik wel, maar ik was gewoon te zwaar beïnvloed door mijn voorbeelden. Dan was ik van alles aan het na-schilderen. Kostte me in die tijd een vermogen aan doeken en verf en uiteindelijk werd het niet wat ik wilde. Je sluit een compromis tussen het werk van de groten en je eigen werk. Dat is nooit goed. Ik heb alles weggegooid, behalve mijn ‘krabbels’, de tekeningen die ik intuïtief maakte.”

Menno verliet de kunst, nam een pragmatische keuze en ging communicatie studeren. “Als romanticus heb je aan een vleugje genoeg. Ik had van de kunstgeschiedenis geproefd en bovendien al veel zelfstudie gedaan. Het is misschien wat kinderachtig door te denken: ‘als ik iets heb geprobeerd, weet ik het’, maar ik wilde verder en er moest bovendien ook brood op de plank. Ik rondde de studie communicatie af in Groningen en ben aan het werk gegaan.”

Compromissen

Ik kan het me permitteren te reizen naar plekken waar ik graag ben en heb de vrijheid om mijn inspiratie te volgen. Ik ben altijd een behoorlijk verzorgend type geweest, maar naarmate ik ouder word, word ik wel wat egocentrischer. Ik kies meer en meer voor dingen die ik zelf wil doen. Zo zou ik nog graag een sabbatical willen. Niet een jaar, maar een maand ofzo. Dat is al genoeg. Even eraan proeven en weer door.“

Voorlopig lijkt die sabbatical nog niet aan de orde, want Menno raast door. Het bloed kruipt immers waar het niet gaan kan.
